The BAE shipyards in Williamstown are the pride of the West, using high-tech manufacturing practices to build world class naval warships.
They are a centre of manufacturing expertise invaluable to Australia. With government contracts for air warfare destroyers nearing completion, a show of support for our shipbuilding experts has never been more necessary.
That’s why it is shocking that the Liberals have refused to commit to building more naval ships in Australia. Who is more capable at building the warships uniquely suited to defending our country than our high-tech shipyards in Williamstown?
The Liberals should commit to future projects in Australia or accept that his decision not to do so will lead to the demise of the Australian shipbuilding industry. Since the Liberals were elected in September 2013 approximately 1000 jobs have been lost from the shipyards in Williamstown. In November this year BAE anounced it would cut 200 jobs from the shipyards before Christmas, with another 150 in the first few months of 2016.
Tim will continue the fight for this vital industry in Melbourne’s West to continue developing the ships that defend this country so effectively.
